Be yourself! No matter what

I am not an angel, I asserted; and I will not be one till I die: I will be myself.

~Charlotte Brontë, Jane Eyre~

How many of you have read this beautiful quote? I am sure many of you have, but have you ever applied this in your own life?

In Indian society women often find it difficult to voice out their opinions and express themselves freely. The majority of the women try to fit into the mould that is created by our society. How a woman should behave as a daughter, wife, and daughter-in-law is directly or indirectly dictated by our society. Our own parents, communities, and the entire system have laid some guidelines for girls and women on how they should behave, act or even dress up. So any girl or a woman who goes against those societal norms is looked down upon.

I am not intending to write about how society is and how it should be. But here, I am trying to tell you that no matter what society is expecting from you, there is no need to adhere to the guidelines that are given or dictated by society, unless you are doing it voluntarily. As a mature woman, you should look within and ask yourself how you want your life to be? Do you want to comply with its norms mindlessly or do you want to follow your heart? Do you want to live life as per people’s expectations or according to your own will, feelings and emotions? The power lies very much in your own hands, if you really want to change the way you are living, it is you who have to learn to voice out and stand up for yourself. People may not act or take a stand for you

Today, many will choose to live free of conditions and rules governing their own happiness. Why not you? Do not let another day go by where your dedication to other people’s opinions is greater than your dedication to your own emotions! Today’s a new day!

~Steve Maraboli~
